Whilst growing up, in the village of St Mabyn in North Cornwall, Andrew developed a love of sketching and exploring his local surroundings including the coastline around Polzeath and the Camel Estuary. With a strong background in drawing practice he subsequently completed his formal training at Falmouth School of Art. Having painted ‘en plein air’ over a number of years he has developed an impressive palette that effectively conveys the pervading mood and sense of place. Loose, dynamic brushstrokes are applied with a combination of washes and impasto – the latter providing an effective texture to the painting.
Andrew says that he is “acutely aware of the pressing of time and the need to be economical with detail”. He will often make notes and take photographs whilst outside and, once back in the studio, these will frequently become an invaluable reference and source of inspiration.
