Barbara Castle (1910-2002) was a Labour politician who broke the glass ceiling for women in Parliament. During the Ford sewing machinists strike of 1968, she intervened on behalf of the female workers in Dagenham, which in turn led to the Equal Pay Act (1970). As Minister for Transport from 1965-68, she was also responsible for introducing the breathalyser and seat belts.
