Lyubov Sergeyevna Popova (1889-1924) was a Russian avant-garde Cubist painter and designer. As a female she was a comparative rarity in the male-dominated world of Soviet art and having first explored Impressionism she then went on to experiment with the Russian development of Cubo-Futurism (a fusion of two equal influences from France and Italy). During the last three years of her life, Popova became exclusively involved in Constructivist projects and began producing stage designs. She died tragically young at the peak of her success as an artist - the term 'Artist-Constructor' was applied to her posthumous exhibition.
