Marguerite Duras (1914-96) was a prolific French novelist, playwright and filmmaker. Her original surname was Donnadieu but after the publication of her first novel she changed it to Duras (which she pronounced with a sibilant ’S’, ‘Dur-ass’). She was an active member of the French Communist Party.
