Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) was born in New Zealand and was well-known as a modernist short story writer. She settled in England at the age of 19 and was friends with D H Lawrence and Virginia Woolf. In 1918 she married John Middleton Murry but died from tuberculosis just five years later aged only 34.
John Middleton Murry (1889-1957) was an editor, critic and prolific author who published more than 60 books. It is rumoured that Virginia Woolf once said he was “the one vile man I have ever known”.
