Mark Twain (1835-1910) was an American writer. As a child, he lived in the port town of Hannibal, Missouri on the Mississippi River, the inspiration for the fictional town of St. Petersburg in two of his best known novels: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. At the time, slavery was legal in Missouri and it became a strong theme in his work.
