William Shakespeare (1564-1616) is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's greatest dramatist. He is often referred to as the Bard and his plays have been translated into almost every living language. The majority of his plays were produced between 1589 and 1613; his early plays were mostly comedies and histories after which, from 1608 onwards, he wrote mainly tragedies (Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth). Towards the end of his life he turned to tragicomedies.
