Dervla Murphy (1931-2022) was arguably the best female travel writer of her generation. On her 10th birthday she was given both a second-hand bicycle, and an atlas. She resolved to ride a bicycle to India one day, and this resulted in the publication of her book, Full Tilt: Ireland to India with a Bicycle (1965). Described as ‘the first lady of Irish cycling’, she went on to write a further 20 travel books. Her chief interests were politics, conversation, cycling and beer.
