Napoléon Bonaparte (1769-1821) was a prominent French statesman and military leader during the French Revolution leading several successful campaigns. He was the French Emperor from 1804 until 1814 and again briefly in 1815 during the Hundred Days War. In 1812, Napoleon's Grande Armee of 610,000 men invaded Russia however it was eventually reduced to 100,000 and it is generally thought that this was, in part, due to the harsh weather conditions. He retreated from Moscow in the snow; his horses had been incorrectly shod.
